Frank O. Amadedon O.B.E.

“For God and the Empire”

Congratulations to our President, Frank Amadedon, who was recently conferred with the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty the Queen for services to Community Relations.  A very fitting reward for his tireless work on behalf of all Nigerians and Minority Ethnic communities.

On the right, you can see Frank in traditional attire proudly showing off his OBE medal.

An avid football fan, one of the highlights for Frank was that a certain Alan Shearer, former captain of the England soccer team, was also there to collect his OBE.

Congratulations Frank.  Alan Shearer is past it but we hope you will continue your good work by representing the rights and interests of all Nigerians and Ethnic Minorities in the West Midlands for some time to come.

Next time, will it be Sir Frank?  ...or Lord Amadedon of Kings Heath?

OBITUARY - Mr. Oluwole Akinola

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing away on Sunday 26th March 2006 of our dear friend, brother and father, Mr. Oluwole Akinola. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to his family at this sad time.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.  Amen.

A Tribute to Mr. Oluwole Akinola
(10/7/1929 - 26/3/2006)

The losses the Nigerian community have suffered recently have been on our minds and tongues, and personally I would add my tribute to the memory of those who have gone from us:

- Mr Olujimi Odemo... his mark will always remain upon UNIWA and to Lions in the District.

- And now we have added to this great loss another that is scarcely less in the passing of 'Uncle', Mr Olu Akinola. It is a trite saying that true value is never appreciated until it is lost.

We who associated with Mr Akinola on the UNIWA Executive shall miss him. His loss is one that will affect the whole Association, both from his eminence in it and the tireless work, his contribution to the Association was immense. He was instrumental in UNIWA securing the Nigerian Centre through many of his contacts in the City Council.

A thorough Nigerian that transcends all our communities in the region with a fond of typical Yoruba humour, his presence at meetings of UNIWA (of which he was Vice President between 2002-2004) will be sincerely missed.

Personally I admired and valued him greatly I shall not forget how he welcomed me to the Association in 2001 and encouraged and supported me during my time as General Secretary.

He was a man for all in all we shall not look upon his like again in our Community.
His wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Uncle, we loved you. May your soul rest in peace.

George Barango Esq.
UNIWA General Secretary (2001-2005)

AFN Warned about Defections

Olympic Champion's warnings ignored

Prior to the Commonwealth Games, Chioma Ajunwa warned that overseas-based stars would defect because of “inhuman treatment” by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

We have suffered enough for this country but all we get is a paltry amount.  Why should we (athletes) continue to allow ourselves be cheated by government all the time”?
